Well, with almost all of the election results in (they aren't as fast here as in the US), the mood has changed. The incumbent president, Levy Mwanawasa, appears to have won, with 43% of the vote. Michael Sata is now at about 28%, along with the other major challenger, H.H. About 70% of the registered voters voted, which I think is a lot better than the usual U.S. percentage.
Given the results, however, there is now an outcry about voting irregularities. Yesterday there was a bit of a riot out where the votes are being tallied, and today there is a heavy police presence. Things have been quiet today, but I am trying to follow the advice I have been given and lay low. I believe that Sata's party has said that they won't contest the results, so I suspect this will blow over pretty quickly. I'll let you know if otherwise.

Heidi, I'm amazed to read in the paper some of what's going on in Zambia and then to read how you are witnessing the event's yourself. I'm grateful to have experienced Lusaca myself last year - thanks to you. I realy like and admire the Zambians we met. Lusaca seemes to me like a positive place, desipite the fact that life not easy for most people there. I'm hoping the best for Zambia! Sounds like you are having a great adventure. Take care!
Thanks for the thoughts Joe and stay in touch! H.
